Abstract

This comparative thesis is intended to demonstrate the shortcomings in T.R.V. Murtis pioneering analysis of Nagarjunas thought, which he then compared with the works of Immanuel Kant. The shortcomings of Murtis analysis are due partially to his assumption that certain concepts in Nagarjunas thought are similar to what is familiar to him from his study of Advaita Vedanta (a Hindu monistic, theistic system). T.R.V. Murti makes an important error when discussing the Tathagata as God that renders his argument unsound. I chose to compare Kant with Je Tsong-kha-pa (who follows Nagarjunas system) in order to demonstrate such errors of hermeneutical analysis. Both Je Tsong-kha-pa and Kant regarded their systems as the only rational approach to the problem of scriptural interpretation. Thus a fruitful comparison is based on the correct hermeneutical approach when embarking on such analysis.
