Abstract

Issues of freedom and moral responsibility have been a major area of discussion in philosophy since the Greeks. The concern over whether our freedom limits our ability be hold others culpable and to be ourselves held culpable is of utmost importance to many philosophers and theologians. In this thesis I present a theory of moral responsibility that places decisionmaking at the center of our worries about freedom and responsibility. I argue that being a good decision-maker with the right kind of personal history is sufficient for culpability and therefore what is needed to be free. This thesis is also an experiment in working with a way of doing philosophy that emphasizes extended narratives over short examples.
