Abstract
Within the past fifteen years, there has been a race to the top for production processes in the banana industry. This research explores the shifting dynamics between the actors in the banana industry--including states, nongovernmental organizations, and transnational companies--in an attempt to decipher which political actors are pressuring for change, who is being pressured, and how. Research was conducted in the banana regions of Bocas del Toro, Panama. Bocas offers an insightful glimpse into the evolving banana industIy, illustrating both patterns common throughout banana producing regions and local deviations from these patterns. This thesis will explore the historical relationship between Bocas del T oro and the banana industry as well as some salient features of the international trade regime for bananas. In doing so, it will illustrate a number of interesting dynamics that characterize contemporary global environmental politics.
