Abstract
The ultimate goal of this thesis was to conduct a quality of care assessment study of acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) pediatric patients admitted to Florida hospitals in 2003. The design of the study was based on a literature review of the current status of quality of health care focusing on: health care in general, children's health care, and cancer care. The study consisted of a set of five quality indicators (QI) for which a core set of independent variables were evaluated in their effect o each QI. A total of l,764 pediatric ALL patients made up the sample of the study. Unadjusted means and linear regression models were calculated using the SAS software to assess the quality of care received by the patients in the sample. Black patients were found to receive poorer quality of care when compared to White patients across all QIs. Patients residing in counties with high-quality providers were found to receive higher quality of care when compared to patients residing elsewhere. The policy implications of these results are discussed as well as suggestions for future studies.
