Abstract
The Brownfields Initiative is a progressive and multifaceted federal program that assists the clean-up and reuse of contaminated urban properties. Two property locations in Sarasota have received Brownfields funding for site assessment activities. Despite this federal financial assistance, remediation efforts at these properties have failed to live up to an ideal technological potential. Tremendous promise exists for the implementation of innovative remediation technologies at these Brownfields sites. Newly developed microbiological, chemical, and physical treatment methods and mathematical modeling offer more efficient and cost-effective options for site remediation. These new developments offer a way to speed up and optimize Brownfields remediation and redevelopment planning, assessment, and implementation. The adequate and appropriate use of innovative subsurface contaminant remediation technologies can overcome institutional impediments that block efficient clean-up and reuse of Sarasota Brownfields sites.
