Abstract

Marleni is a fictional drama about real people: actress Marlene Dietrich and film director Leni Riefenstahl. This 'dialogue,' occurring on the day of Marlene Dietrich's death in 1992, features the two characters' reminiscences about the past as well as the possibility of producing a film of Heinrich von Kleist's play Penthesilea sometime in the near future. Footnotes and translator's notes explain interesting political and biographical issues that Dietrich's and Riefenstahl's characters mention during the play, and denote the difference between reality and the lives that Dietrich and Riefenstahl imagined for themselves. Thea Dorn's appendix to the play, 'Steep Summits, Long Shadows,' written in support of Leni Riefenstahl, is included as well.
