Abstract
This thesis examines Ayurveda, an ancient Indian healing system, and its integration into American health care. Research on this subject focused on four areas: the origins and the basic philosophies of Ayurveda; the current practice and education of Ayurveda in India and the affects of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) on American health care; the practice and education of Ayurveda in America; and scientific attempts to integrate and evaluate CAM. This thesis presents where Ayurveda is currently at in its process of integrating into America. Furthermore, this thesis argues that because it is a whole system of practice the possibility of full integration (licensure) is possible.
