Abstract

This thesis asks the question of whether a literal or non-literal translation of the Bible is meritorious when translating from the Ancient Hebrew and the New Testament Greek into other languages. It further describes humanists and scholars throughout Europe in the 1500s and their struggles with translation and with the Church's criticism of each version. Not losing sight of the modem-day problems of translation, another question is raised about whether texts printed today can withstand a critical exegesis of key words. It can be concluded that translating the 'sacred' will continue to be a conundrum for a myriad of reasons.
