Abstract

This project focuses on the people in Israel today who are working towards a future of peaceful coexistence. The thesis examines the concept of peace and the notion of human nature in academia. It calls for academics to devote as much attention to the study of peace as there is towards the study of war. The project examines mixed communities in Israel and discusses the difference between living together and coexistence. Two organizations, Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam, and Seeds of Peace are highlighted as effective in their work towards coexistence. The thesis brings forward the voices of children who are involved with the organizations, as well as the voices of the staff who operate them. The project is concerned with human interaction, dialogue, and cooperation between people working for peace in Israel and abroad. The goal of the project is to show that even in a region that has had historic conflict, there are still people dedicated to peace and coexistence. By highlighting these people, the project argues that there is hope for social change in Israel today.
