Abstract
Eight Pieces for Brass Quintet is a collection of interrelated compositions that combine serial and minimalist techniques. Parts 1-3 are based on a single pitch series, which is subjected to various transformational and combinatorial processes. Parts 4-8 focus less on pitch manipulations than on additive and subtractive rhythmic procedures. The companion essay to Eight Pieces discusses the prime influences on the project, including the composer's earlier compositions, the writings of John Cage, and the music of Steve Reich. Finally, analytical commentary is provided for each composition in Eight Pieces for Brass Quintet.
