Abstract
This thesis discusses the relationship between the native people of Florida and plants through time starting with the Paleo-Indian period and ending with the modern day Seminoles. It will discuss the individual ecosystems found throughout the area of study, Southwest Florida, which will include the counties of Charlotte, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Collier, Monroe and southern Sarasota. The cultural regions covered will be Western Glades, Caloosahatchee, West Okeechobee, and Manasota. Using available archaeological, historical, botanical, and ethnographical information, it will discuss specific plants available and those known to be utilized by Floridians at each historical stage.
