Abstract
My senior visual art thesis and exhibition, 'A Delicate Balance', summarizes my work in the field of visual arts. This thesis explores the artistic influences, sources of inspiration, materials, and processes that were pertinent to the creation of this body of work. The works address the theme of my personal concern over humankind's relationship with nature, and the consequent abuse of the environment. A life-long attachment to the exploration of nature prompted me to use myself as a central element in many of the sculptures. It was my hope that I would cause the viewers to see selfand apply it to themselves, thus arousing their empathetic response. Natural materials have been contrasted with man-made counterparts to emphasize diminishing natural resources and our acceptance of these imposters. As well, natural resources have been shown in various states of debasement, such as polluted water. Respect for nature is important to me, both as a human and an artist. Its destruction became more evident to me while living in Florida and witnessing the rapid alteration of the landscape. This body of work is a testament to my deep-rooted feeling of oneness with the nature that surrounds me, and the first of the statements, which I wish to make to humankind.
