Abstract
This thesis was an exploration of the presence of text in visual art. In order to examine the context of text in art today, I undertook a brief history of text in visual art throughout the 20th century. From that research, it was reasoned that text in visual art had two main peaks of popularity in the 20th century, the first being the Dada period and the later being the Conceptual Art period. Both periods relied heavily on signage as their primary means of incorporating text in art. and more painterly attempts to incorporate text into visual art were scarce. With this history in mind, I conducted studio research to find innovative ways to use text as a medium in visual art. The studio research yielded an exhibition of works. Painterly elements influenced largely by artist Pat Steir create an aesthetic language in each of the pieces. Placement also proved to be a large factor in the studio work's execution, and presentation was carefully thought out. However, while the pieces have painterly elements and placement concerns, viewers commented on the necessity of the text in each work to make the piece successful and it remained the dominant element. This exhibition also inspired future work in which series and different placement may be explored.
