Abstract

This thesis is a formative evaluation of the Family Nutrition Program's nutrition/ESOL Pilot Project administered between September and December 2002 to Sarasota's local Hispanic community. A review of existing data on Hispanic health issues resulted in a strategic planning report outlining health issues salient to this group as a suggested focus for program content. Observation, surveys, and interviews with instructors, participants, and local health care providers were conducted. This investigation resulted in a needs assessment comprised of seven case studies and an outline of the enablers and barriers to nutrition education and healthy behavior. A content analysis of the Pilot Project's curriculum materials was carried out to measure the accessibility of materials for the sample group. All of these findings were drawn together in a draft of recommendations, which included an outline of future evaluation processes, a plea for networking with other agencies, and a four-point plan of action that Program Assistants can use to tailor their projects to their audience's specif'ic needs and concerns.
