Abstract

This thesis is a comparative study between the poor environmental conditions in Nepal and Bhutan and the sociopolitical factors that cause those conditions. It isolates six independent variables and discusses the way in which each contributes to the environmental problems of Nepal and Bhutan. Each chapter highlights one of the six variables: economic development, political structure, religion, non-government organizations, foreign aid, and population. The findings conclude that it is not a single factor that causes the environmental degradation in those countries, instead it is a combination of multiple variables.
